Women in the Viking Age

(Kvinner i vikingtid) Traditionally, scholarship on the Viking Age has been concentrated around the male universe. Inquiry and research on women and their lives has mainly been concerned with the roles of wife, mother and mistress of a farm. But Viking-Age women were not only passive actors in the events taking place. They played a number of active roles.

This interdisciplinary anthology addresses women’s activities in a social context. Which positions in society could women occupy? What opportunities and rights did they have? Moreover, could they acquire power in the same ways as men? Contributors from a number of fields approach the stereotypes regarding the portrayal of women, questioning them from their disciplinary standpoints. It is high time this was done!

Women in the Viking Age consists of 17 articles, 6 are in English and the rest in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish. Editors are Nanna Løkka and Nancy L. Coleman. The book is richly illustrated in color.
