Honour, law and religion in Norway through a thousand years
The debate on the Muhammed caricatures arouse a new understanding of the concepts of honour and religion in today’s society. The law, the religion and the concept of honour are ways to create and to justify social norms. In Norway today the law is indisputable superior to religion and honour. In the global perspective however, things do often seem different. In other cultural traditions the concept of honour and religion can be as important as the law. Religion and honour were fundamental in the western cultural tradition as well up to the seventeenth century. The historic perspective is crucial when we talk about understanding why the concepts of honour are so different in the western part of the world from more traditional societys in for example The Middle East.
